Cemre Yeşil Gönenli İstanbul’da yaşayan bir fotoğrafçı ve sanatçı. Lisans eğitimini İstanbul Bilgi Üniversitesi, Fotoğraf ve Video bölümünde aldıktan sonra yüksek lisansını Sabancı Üniversitesi, Görsel Sanatlar bölümünde tamamladı. London College of Communication’ın Fotoğraf Bölümü’nde başladığı doktora programından 2017’de ayrılarak araştırmasına bağımsız olarak devam etti. İşleri The Guardian, International Centre of Photography New York, British Journal of Photography, Colors Magazine, La Fabrica, 6 mois, İstanbul Modern ve Salt Beyoğlu gibi yerlerde sergilendi ve yayınlandı.
2020 yılında çıkan kitabı Hayal & Hakikat, PhotoEspana 2021 Yılın Fotoğraf Kitabı Ödülüne layık görüldü. Aynı kitap hem Paris Photo Aperture Fotoğraf Kitabı ödülleri’nde Yılın Fotoğraf Kitabı kategorisine, hem de Recontres Arles 2021 Historical Book Ödüllerine aday oldu. 2014 ve 2021’de Amsterdam Photography Museum FOAM’ın Paul Huf Awards, 2016’da ING Unseen Awards ve Lead Awards’a aday gösterildi. Maria Sturm’la birlikte çalıştığı projesi For Birds’ Sake ile British Journal of Photography’nin Şubat 2015 sayısında takip edilmesi gereken 25 genç sanatçı arasında yer aldı. Aynı proje PHE OjodePez Award for Human Values and Renaissance Photography Prize, Arles Author Book Award and Prix Levallois Award’a aday gösterildi.
Eserleri Houston Center of Photography, New York Library, İstanbul Modern ve RISD Library’nin koleksiyonlarına dahil edildi. Halen Falmouth Üniversitesi Fotoğraf yüksek lisans bölümü ve İstanbul Bilgi Üniversitesi, Görsel İletişim Tasarımı lisans bölümünde ders vermekte olan Cemre Yeşil Gönenli aynı zamanda yazar, küratör ve yayıncı olarak da üretim yapmakta. Yakın zamanda Milli Reasürans Galerisi’ndeki sergisine paralel olan çıkan kitabı ‘Double Portrait’ PhotoEspana 2021 Best Photobook of the Year ödülüne aday oldu. 9 yıllık bir araştırma ve fotografik pratiğin ürünü olan bu kitap, çifte portre fotoğrafları, annenin kucağı ve yokluğu üzerine görsel ve metinsel denemelerden oluşuyor.
Cemre Yeşil Gönenli ayrıca Karaköy’de yer alan fotoğraf kitapları, sanatçı buluşmaları ve atölyelere adanmış olan ve 2017’de bir yayınevi olan FiLBooks’un kurucusu.

II. Abdülhamid, saltanatının 25. yılında, planlanan bir af için hazırlık olarak, mahkûmların elleri görünür şekilde fotoğraflanmalarını emretti. Bir suç romanında okuduğu, “başparmak eklemi işaret parmağı ekleminden daha uzun olan herhangi bir suçlunun cinayete meyilli olduğu” şeklindeki, sözde bilimsel bilgiden etkilenmiş.
O ölürse üzülür müydünüz?
– Çok.
– O zaman affedin.
“Hayal” (Rüya), bu mahkûmların affedilme arzusunu, tebaanın affedilmeyi bekleyen ellerini göstererek sembolize eder.
Öte yandan “Hakikat” (Gerçek), zincire vurulmuş ve ölüme mahkûm edilmiş mahkûmların gerçek koşullarını ortaya koyar.
Mahkûmların başlarını, sanki giyotinle kesilmiş gibi, çerçevenin dışında bırakmak, onları kurtarmak için bir jesttir; suçlular olarak kimliklerini yeniden kaydetmek, suçları ne olursa olsun onları bir kenara atmak için değil, onlara, ikinci bir şans vermek veya hatta özgürlüklerini geri vermek ve belki de onları affetmeye çalışmak için.
Bu fotoğraflar, 'Rüya' ile 'Gerçek' arasındaki çizginin sıklıkla endişe verici bir düzeyde bulanıklaştığı, içinde bulunduğumuz sıkıntılı döneme benzer bir ışık tutuyor. Baskı ve keyfi tutuklamaların olduğu bir zamanda, bu görüntüler tarih boyunca yazılmış özgür konuşma gibidir - sessiz bir protesto.
Hayal ve Hakikat, Türkiye'nin içinden geçtiği bu zor zamanlarda, keyfi olarak mahkum edilen veya bu güzel topraklardan ayrılmak zorunda kalan parlak insanlara adanmıştır.

Abdulhamid II, during the 25th year of his reign, ordered convicts to be photographed with their hands showing, in preparation for a planned amnesty. He has been moved by pseudo-scientific information he had read in a crime novel that “any criminal with a thumb joint longer than the index finger joint, is inclined to murder.”
Would you be upset if he dies?
– So much.
– Then, forgive.
“Hayal” (Dream) symbolizes the desire of these prisoners to be forgiven by showing the subjects’ hands awaiting forgiveness.
“Hakikat” (Fact), on the other hand, reveals the actual circumstances of the prisoners who are chained and sentenced to death.
Leaving the heads of the prisoners out of the frame, as if they had been cut by the guillotine is a gesture to save them; not to re-record their identities as criminals, discarding their crimes whatever they were, but rather to give them a second chance or even to give them back their freedom, and perhaps to try to forgive them.
These photographs shed a comparable light on the troubling era at hand, where the line between ‘Dream’ and ‘Fact’ is often blurred at an alarming level. In a time of repression and arbitrary detentions, these images are like free speech written through history —a silent protest.
Hayal & Hakikat is dedicated to bright people who are arbitrarily convicted or had to depart from this beautiful land in these difficult times that Türkiye is going through.

Cemre Yeşil Gönenli is a Turkish photographer and artist living in Istanbul. Her BA in photography is from Istanbul Bilgi University and she holds an MA in Visual Arts from Sabancı University. In 2017, she dropped out her practice-based PhD in London College of Communication. Her work has been exhibited and published internationally including The Guardian, International Centre of Photography New York, British Journal of Photography, Colors Magazine, La Fabrica, 6 mois, Istanbul Modern Museum, and Salt Beyoğlu.
Her 2020 book Hayal & Hakikat was the winner of Best Photobook of the Year in PhotoEspana 2021 and the same book was shortlisted in Paris Photo Aperture Photobook Awards for the Photobook of the Year Category and Historical Book Award in Recontres Arles 2021. She was also nominated for the Paul Huf Award of Amsterdam Photography Museum FOAM in 2014 and 2021, for ING Unseen Talent Award 2016 and for Lead Awards 2016. British Journal of Photography - Ones to Watch issue (February 2015) introduced her amongst the 25 most promising new talents in global survey of emerging photographers with the work ‘For Birds’ Sake’ (in collaboration with Maria Sturm). The same work was finalist at PHE OjodePez Award for Human Values and Renaissance Photography Prize, Arles Author Book Award and Prix Levallois.
Her works are included in the collections of Houston Center for Photography, New York Library, Istanbul Modern Museum, and RISD Library. She currently lectures on photography in Falmouth University MA Photography and Istanbul Bilgi University BA Visual Communication Design. She also works as a writer, curator and publisher. Recently, she published her book titled ‘Double Portrait’ in paralel with her exhibition in Milli Reasürans Art Gallery which was shortlisted in PhotoEspana 2021 Best Photography Book of the Year Award. The work is an outcome of 9 years of research and practical work on photographic double portraiture; a hybrid book of photographs and essays on mother’s embrace and absence. Cemre Yeşil Gönenli is also the founder of FiLBooks; a space dedicated to photo books, artist talks and workshops which in 2017 became a publishing house in Karaköy, Istanbul.
